Episode 23. 12 questions, matched to who is asking

Questions to ask the interviewer should show how the work runs day to day.

Ask about on-call, review turnaround and how a decision gets made.

Pick 3 per round, matched to the person in front of you.

A candidate with no questions can read as disinterested, and the panel notes it.

Why do questions to ask the interviewer matter?

Questions to ask the interviewer matter because the last minutes show your priorities.

Most rounds leave 5 to 10 minutes for them. The topics you pick tell the panel what you value in a job.

The scorecard can carry a line about them. Strong questions give the interviewer something to write.

Which questions to ask the interviewer fit each person in the loop?

The right questions to ask the interviewer depend on who is asking. Each person knows different things.

A recruiter knows the process. A peer knows the daily work.

A manager knows the goals. A skip-level knows how decisions travel between teams.

Person Ask What you learn
Recruiter Where do candidates usually get cut? The real shape of the loop
Recruiter Is this role new, or a replacement? Why the seat is open
Peer engineer How long does a pull request wait for review? Team speed and review culture
Peer engineer What did you last ship, and what went wrong? Honest delivery detail
Peer engineer How often are you on call, and what pages you? Operational load
Hiring manager What does success look like at 6 months? The goals you will be held to
Hiring manager What happened to the last person in this role? Why it is open
Hiring manager How do you give feedback, and how often? Management style
Skip-level How do 2 teams settle a technical disagreement? How decisions travel
Skip-level What is the company not good at yet? Candid priorities

Which questions hurt a candidate?

Two kinds of question hurt a candidate. The careers page already answers the first. The second sounds like a negotiation.

Asking what the company does shows no preparation. Opening with holiday allowance reads as order of priority.

Challenging the interviewer turns a conversation into a debate. “Why is your stack so old?” is one example.

Save pay and perks for the recruiter. Raise them once the process reaches an offer.

How many questions to ask the interviewer in each round?

A candidate should ask 2 or 3 questions per round. A spare covers one that gets answered earlier.

Three questions to ask the interviewer show interest without eating the time.

Ask the most useful one first, since the clock can end the round.

Write the questions down before the day. Notes in front of you read as preparation. A structured interview rewards that.

How do you use the answers to compare offers?

Compare offers by asking several people the same question, then comparing what they say.

Different on-call descriptions from a recruiter and a manager are information. Agreement across 3 people is a strong signal.

Write each answer down within an hour. Memory smooths the differences. The phone screen is a good place to start the notes.

Common questions

What if the interviewer already answered your question?

Say so and ask a follow-up. “You mentioned weekly releases. Who decides when a release is held?” shows you listened. Asking a question the interviewer just answered signals the opposite. Keep a spare question per round for this reason. Keep a few that depend on what the person says.

Should you ask about salary in the interview?

Ask the recruiter, early, in the first call. Ask the hiring manager about the role, not the pay. Pay questions put an engineer on the loop in an awkward spot. Engineers do not set pay. Salary talk belongs with the person who can answer it.

Can you ask the interviewer about their own experience?

Yes, and it is usually the best question you have. “What made you join, and what keeps you here?” invites a specific answer. People enjoy talking about their work. The answer gives you a real view of the team. Keep it honest, and avoid flattering the person.

Is it bad to take notes during the interview?

No. Notes show you take the answers seriously. Say “I will write that down” and keep eye contact between points. Bring a short list of questions on paper. Do not read them aloud one after another. That sounds like a script.

What are the best questions to ask an interviewer?

The best questions to ask an interviewer are specific to the person and the job. Ask how long a pull request waits for review. Ask what success looks like at 6 months. Specific questions show preparation and give you real information.

The short version
